Empowering Cancer Patients with Personalized Care Tools
Thryve is a desktop application designed to support cancer patients through their treatment journey, offering holistic guidance and empowering patients with personalized resources, interactive tools, and informed decision-making.
As the sole designer, I spearheaded every aspect of the project: creating the color palette to complement the logo design, crafting a design system, designing wireframes (both low and high fidelity), and prototyping user flows. The result is a polished, user-centered solution addressing the complex challenges of oncology care.
Why Thryve?
During my internship, a significant gap in oncology care was uncovered:
Patients lacked the long-term guidance and support tools necessary to navigate the fragmented and overwhelming treatment landscape.
Key findings from research include:
78% of patients expressed uncertainty about their treatment and survivorship plans
Patients emphasized the need for visual tools and actionable steps to track progress and manage their care with confidence
This gap inspired Thryve, a platform designed to offer clarity and structure during a challenging time.

Designing a Platform to Simplify and Support the Cancer Care Journey
How might we create a platform that:
Provides holistic guidance through all treatment stages?
Offers decision-making tools tailored to the unique needs of cancer patients?
Combines a user-friendly interface with emotional reassurance and practical functionality?
This challenge required a deep understanding of user pain points and an empathetic approach to deliver a solution that truly supports patients.
Addressing Gaps in Cancer Care with Insight-Driven Design
Building on insights from my internship, I identified and prioritized the most significant pain points, which directly informed Thryve’s design principles to comprehensively and intuitively address these challenges. They are as follows:
Care Fragmentation
Patients faced confusion and delays when navigating multiple networks
Confidence Deficit
A lack of long-term guidance left patients unsure of their treatment plans
Information Overload
Patients struggled to process the abundance of resources, leading to missed or forgotten tasks
Appointment Challenges
Overwhelming schedules made managing appointments stressful
Actionable Tools
Patients lacked interactive features to stay engaged in their day-to-day care

"How might we simplify the oncology treatment journey to improve patient confidence and empower decision-making?"
Crafting Compassionate and Scalable Solutions for Patient Care
To address these challenges, I established guiding design principles:
Empathy First
Design with compassion, prioritizing accessibility, clarity, and emotional reassurance through calm visuals
Actionable Guidance
Provide interactive, stage-specific tools to empower patients
Scalability
Create scalable designs to support evolving needs
A Calming and Trustworthy Brand Identity for Stress-Free Care
The Thryve logo and design system feature calming shades of blue, blue-green, grey, and white to evoke trust, serenity, and professionalism. These colors reflect the target audience's need for a reassuring, clean interface during a stressful time.

Building a Cohesive and Scalable Design System for Accessibility
I crafted a comprehensive design system in Figma to ensure consistency, scalability, and an accessible user experience throughout Thryve. Designed to reflect the platform’s core values of trust, calmness, and professionalism, this system provides a strong foundation for future iterations and evolving user needs. The key components include:
Typography
Clear, modern sans-serif fonts for readability and accessibility
Component Library
Modular UI elements to ensure scalability and consistency
Icons
Minimalist designs for intuitive navigation

User Flow Diagram: Designing Intuitive Patient Experiences
I meticulously designed the user flow and layout to prioritize simplicity, clarity, and intuitive navigation. Each step in the flow was carefully mapped to align with user goals, minimizing cognitive load while ensuring seamless transitions between key actions. By focusing on logical pathways and efficient layouts, I created a foundation that supports both user engagement and accessibility, setting the stage for a polished and user-centered experience in subsequent iterations.

Low Fidelity Wireframes
The low-fidelity wireframes were crafted to establish the foundational structure and user flow of Thryve. They focused on mapping key interactions, including the Log In/Sign Up process, Dashboard overview, Appointments page, and Task List functionality. By prioritizing simplicity and layout clarity, these wireframes provided a blueprint for user navigation while ensuring that all essential features were strategically placed.
High Fidelity Wireframes
Building on the low-fidelity wireframes, I translated the foundational designs into high-fidelity wireframes to bring clarity, polish, and enhanced functionality to the user experience. In addition to refining the Log In and Sign Up screens, I focused on three key pages that define Thryve’s core features:
Dashboard
A centralized hub showing the patient’s treatment stage, task list, support resources, and upcoming appointments
Appointments Page
An interactive calendar view displaying scheduled appointments, notes, and reminders
Task List Page
A daily task tracker with customizable options to add notes, attachments, or edit tasks
Simulating Intuitive Patient Journeys with an Interactive Prototype
Building on the high-fidelity wireframes, I developed an interactive prototype in Figma to simulate Thryve’s user flow and validate the design’s usability. The prototype captured the core interactions of the platform, focusing on functionality, accessibility, and user-centric design. Key flows included:
Log In/Sign Up Flow
A streamlined process allowing both new and returning users to quickly and securely access their accounts, with clear feedback for errors and multiple sign-in options
Navigation to Core Features
Direct access to the Dashboard, Appointments, and Task List pages, ensuring users could efficiently manage their care with minimal friction
Task Editing Flow
A daily task tracker with customizable options to add notes, attachments, or edit tasks seamlessly, fostering personalized and actionable engagement
Log Out Flow
A thoughtfully designed confirmation modal to ensure users could log out securely or remain on the platform without accidental exits
Delivering Clarity, Engagement, and Confidence Through Thoughtful Design
Thryve's design showcases innovation and attention to user needs. Key projected benefits include:
Improved Task Management: Simplified task tracking to reduce daily cognitive load
Enhanced Engagement: Intuitive navigation to keep users actively managing their care
User Confidence: Clear visual design and structured workflows to reduce treatment-related anxiety
What I learned
The Thryve project provided invaluable lessons in designing for vulnerable users while addressing complex healthcare challenges. It reinforced how thoughtful design can balance emotional reassurance with practical functionality. Several key takeaways emerged during this process:
Empathy in Design
Balancing emotional reassurance with actionable functionality is critical for healthcare solutions
Design Systems
Creating scalable systems ensures consistency and simplifies future iterations
Iterative Problem Solving
Testing and refining early concepts revealed usability challenges, driving iterative improvements for a more user-friendly experience
Accessibility Design
Ensuring accessibility through clear layouts, responsive designs, and contrast compliance made the solution inclusive for all users
What I would do differently
While the Thryve project was a valuable learning experience, there are areas I identified for potential improvement to enhance the solution's impact and inclusivity. By refining specific aspects of the design and exploring advanced integrations, I could further elevate the platform. Key areas I would focus on include:
Key Interactions
Testing the prototype with a more diverse user group to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all demographics
Integrations
Exploring predictive analytics or AI-powered insights to provide tailored recommendations and a more personalized user experience
Scalability Enhancements
Designing additional features, such as modular components, to future-proof the platform as user needs evolve
Streamlined User Onboarding
Refining the onboarding flow to ensure a smoother experience for first-time users, reducing the time to achieve their goals
Expanding Thryve’s Reach with Accessibility and Real-World Validation
To elevate Thryve further, future plans include:
Building a responsive mobile version for on-the-go access and greater accessibility
Incorporating multilingual support to reach diverse patient demographics
Collaborating with healthcare providers to test, refine and validate the design with real users
